History, Route 66, and Ozark Trails
Wellston's history is steeped in commerce. Since 1880 when Christian T Wells founded a trading post at the site, the community has kept a small but stable presence in Oklahoma. (See details at Oklahoma Historical Society.) Historic Route 66 established in 1926 along the Ozark Trails line is an important part of our community even though it threatened our survival when rerouted in 1932. Fierce fighting for and by our community resulted in the creation of a Route 66B designation for the loop that still runs downtown Wellston today. (For more information visit Legends of America, The Route-66, Oklahoma Historical Society, and Jim Ross's Ozark Trails.)
Today, Wellston's commerce is rich with small businesses that are the lifeblood of economy.
